Summer Sailing Camp of scuOlAvela is a sailing course in the English language for children and teenagers; it will take place in the Tuscan Sea of the Etruscan coast.

The sailing aspect of it will be led by qualified instructors in which one of these will be from the Italian Sailing Federation.

The course objective is to create an environment where students become passionate about sailing while learning the various responsibilities and teamwork that sailing entails.

The course, for the weeks from June 21st to July 23rd, will consist of a short, shore based theoretical lesson in both English and Italian and then lots of boating activities in the splendid waters between Salivoli, Baratti and the Island of Elba. In those weeks activities will be carried out mainly in English. In addition to the skipper, mother-tongue English teachers will always be present onboard and on land.

In the week from 26 to 30 July the group will be assisted by an expert in marine biology who will accompany the children to discover the sea and its inhabitants.

The marine environment offers countless possibilities to use both Italian and English languages to express places, natural elements, boats parts and so on.

The group will be held to a maximum 18 students per week, which allows for the appropriate control needed to motivate each participant.

Accommodation
Participants will stay in the guesthouse made available by the Yacht Club.

These newly renovated (2021) apartments and dormitories are adjacent to one another and are equipped with a kitchen, bathroom with a shower and air conditioning accommodates young guests.

During this week the children will also take advantage of the kitchen and become “young chefs”.

There will be an adult present at all times to supervise the cooking, ensure that the children are following the hours of silence and keeping the accommodations clean.

Boats
scuOlAvela uses J‑Boats J80 boats, small sporty cabin cruisers, which are sturdy and very fun.

Their timeless design, by Rod Johnstone, makes these 8-meter monotype boats true style icons. They bring together all the aspects of the J Boats brand, perfectly combining a unique design with a totally avant-garde spirit.

The furling jib and the asymmetrical spinnaker make them easy and very fun, particularly suitable for learning basic techniques.

Sailing school
scuOlAvela instructors have over twenty years of experience from the best Italian and International schools. This was further confirmed, thanks to the tools the Italian Sailing Federation offers.

Each participant will be provided with didactic materials and manuals which, at the end of the course, can be brought home so that they can continue to practice and to remember the methods acquired.

Sports goal
Given the young age of the participants, the primary objective is to have fun together and create a passion for the sea and sailing while learning leadership skills.

For the “over 12” group, the additional objective is to make the young sailors able to sail the sea with a small sailboat, and return to land independently.

English language
The constant presence of a mother tongue teacher, combined with their specific experience with children and teenagers, guarantees of the best results in terms of learning and growth in the use of the English language.

Everyday there will be activities done in English aimed at involving all the participants and improving their skills in group work while having fun together in a supportive, safe and nurturing environment.

Linguistic objective
Indoor or outdoor activities are part of the value-added learning and teaching process.

Our objective is to stimulate child’s imagination and curiosity all while providing the close intimacy like a family. We create an environment of total immersion in both the English language and culture based on the children’s experience.

This allows the children to acquire linguistic competences linked to day-to-day experiences, and to learn how to develop new ideas and challenge their preconceptions even in the space of a week.

These attitudes and skills are an important development in order for the children to express themselves.

Learning focus
Our focus will be on:
– The desire and joy of learning
– A sense of innovation
– A respect for diversity
– Recognizing the need to respect others
– Team building
– Leadership skills
